Microsoft (and others) Just Don't Get It

Microsoft apparently doesn't like to listen and then dialog with their most sophisticated users when it comes to security issues, to name just one way they are failing as a business in the Information Age. A security vulnerability in SQL Server, Microsoft's premier database management application which competes with products like Oracle, MySQL, and others was discovered and reported in the linked article.  In a nutshell, this security vulnerability allows a user with administrative priveledges to SQL Server to access other user's passwords, but not without some "hacking" to do so.  In any case, Microsoft has refused to fix the problem because they don't care about their users.

Why Christians Don't "Go Green"

In today's global marketplace of ideas, the idea of "saving the planet" or "going green" are really two similar ideas that find their origins in the environmental movement, a movement based in part on animism - the belief system that not only do humans and animals have souls, but so do all things in nature including rocks, plants, trees, etc. By now you probably realize that I have a bias against environmentalism, "going green", and animistic practices, and you are right because I am a Christian, which is to say that I am a follower of Jesus Christ, the Bible (which was written by men throughout antiquity to teach us about who God is, and his plan of salvation for each individual through Jesus Christ), and the teachings of orthodox Christianity which comport with the teachings contained in the Bible.

Tolerance Covenant in Culture

OK, I just read a good article on tolerance arising from relativism, and I have an example from my daily life of a conundrum which I think it is hard for a true relativist to reconcile.

Neo-Paganism - A Peter Jones Interview

Peter Jones grew up hanging out with John Lennon (seriously, listen to him say it in this interview!), wasn't a scholar, but went on to get all kinds of training in theology, philosophy, and culture from a historical perspective.  I think you will really enjoy this interview, even if you're not a Christian:

Excellent Resources for Critical Biblical Studies

First of all, if you are a serious student or interested bystander of what is going on in culture and the world at large today as it pertains to Christianity in relation to culture, you need to begin staying abreast of articles on TheResurgence, a website developed in large part by Marc Driscoll of Mars Hill (Seattle) and the Acts 29 network.  Secondly, I just found one of their more thorough recent posts about apologetics, and the information contained in that article are excellent!  Interestingly, a lot of the works of long-dead Biblical apologists are freely available through sites like the Internet Archive and Google's book scanning efforts.  The one I am most looking forward to reading some day is a work on the history of "free thought".

The Current Housing Financial Crisis Defined

If you have been wondering why this current American-led financial crisis has been mostly focused on the collapse of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, along with the disappearance of any strictly investment focused firms (rather than investment banks) on Wall St., then you need to think about how we deal with housing subsidies in this country. Housing subsidies are great for those of us in the middle and upper classes of earning power because we can afford to purchase a home, and in doing so we not only invest in appreciable assets (home prices have generally been excellent American investment vehicles over the long run) but also gain the mortgage interest tax benefits of owning a home.

Climate Change Moral Questions

I'll have to write more about this tonight, but seriously?!?: Southern Baptist leaders shift position on climate change

Copyleft Good for Post-Modern America

There was an interesting link posted today on Slashdot regarding a post that Bruce Shneier recently wrote about a law journal article written by John Tehranian on the everyday copyright infringements we are all guilty of in America. If that seems like a lot of links, just focus on reading the last link which is the original PDF article from John Tehranian. It is full of good stuff.
